Gwydir Industries Inc is an Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) which provides training and support for people with a DisAbility. At a public meeting held in the War Memorial Education Centre on the 23rd October 1963 the Gwydir handicapped Children’s Association was formed. It is interesting to note that from the very beginning the association was supported by the people of Moree, the Moree Plains Shire Council (by way of land) and the districts farmers and graziers responded to a wheat drive and cattle appeal to raise the essential finances. Children attending the school grew up. Some nine years later (1972) the organisation moved to establish a sheltered workshop so as to provide work for disabled people. On the 18th September 1976 the Gosport Street site was officially opened. Workshops throughout Australia were partly funded by the Federal Government under the Handicapped Persons Act. At June 1987 the Government gazetted the Disability Services Act 1986 and its principles and Objectives. This Act enables a more flexible range of services to be made available to people with disabilities. The Principles and Objectives reflect how all services for people with disabilities ought to be developed and delivered.
